Learning is a Continuum

Wednesday, May 19, 2010 by Kevin Donaldson
Here a good way to think about learning and personal development:  It's a slope and at any point you are either moving forward or moving backwards.  This is no standing still.  There are 3 key aspects of moving forward on the learning and personal development continuum:
  1. It needs to be driven by you - your passions and interests
  2. Knowing that is about the journey and not the end - You will never reach the top of the slope  (that's a good thing for a full and productive learning life)
  3. Learning in isolation will limit forward movement and even move you backwards.  Diversity of thought is important for learning leaps.
Obviously the more this aligns to your work life, the greater your success and satisfaction.  There are many opportunities out there to learn in your local community.  Last month we had 3 amazing events for startups.  Just last week I spend a couple of hours learning about the start-up wine industry, and while I likely will not start a winery, the diversity of though created new learning leaps for me personally.  The opportunities continue:

Startup Weekend Idaho (May 21-23):  What can you accomplish in 54 hours?  Start up weekend brings together developers, business managers and startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more at a weekend long event to build projects communities and companies.

IdaVation (May 26):  IdaVation is a tremendous opportunity to learn from an ensemble of business luminaries and experienced successful entrepreneurs.  This years theme: Fostering a culture of innovation

Don't be a victim to learning backslides.  There are absolutely no reasons for this other than your own motivation.
